My name is Md. Hazrat Ali. My father and mother, Bashir Uddin and Martuza Khatun, both died during my childhood. My elder brother and sister took care of me following their deaths. We are from Thakurgaon district. I moved from Thakurgaon to Cox’s Bazar in 2016 and was admitted to study at Cox’s Bazar Polytechnic College.

My college friend told me about the YES Center at Ramu Upazilla in Cox’s Bazar and the variety of free training courses that they offer. I had heard that those trainings were very helpful as many youth from my area have already gotten a job following their participation in the program. Because of the successes that I had seen amongst the youth in my community, I was encouragedto visit the YES center myself and found it to be a very nice place surrounded by natural views.

After talking to the manager of the YES center I was admitted to the English language course and completed the trainings in three months. I also participated in the life skills training and was further motivated to develop my capacities not only to help myself, but also to help others.

As a result of the trainings that I received at the YES Centre, I became inspired to invent something new. I shared my idea with YPSA and my college teacher and they encouraged me and helped me to get financial support that was necessary. I participated in all types of science and youth related events and competitions with my small science project throughout Cox’s Bazar. I was motivated to create something that would benefit my community and came up with an idea for a new type of AC system that would be more affordable for middle income families. Finally, I completed this project and created an AC system that had a production cost of less than half of the system’s cost that was presently on the market.

My new AC system consumes 90% less electricity as it is environmentally friendly and can run on solar power. I named my creation “A Power Saving Portable AC for Whole Year” because this product can be utilized year-round and is very portable and easy to carry. I used separate filters for dust control and a thermometer to control the heat. I also used a humidity fire to control the level humidity in the air. I participated in many different science fairs with my invention and won the first prize at the district level as well as the divisional level. I was also awarded as a youth initiator at Cox’s Bazar district. I also participated in national level competition and was recognized by the Government of Bangladesh for my invention.

My teacher, Mr. Moniruzzaman, as well as four of my friends, Shahnewaz, Rassel, Rana and Sarjatul Islam helped me to make this AC. I am truly grateful to all of them for their assistance in helping to make my dream come true. I also must express my heartfelt gratitude to YPSA for inspiring this dream and enabling me to take forward steps towards reaching my ultimate goals and aspirations. The impact that the YPSA and the YES Center has made on my life is enormous and I will forever be thankful for their efforts to make a difference in my community!

Training makes a person skilled and inspired to move ahead. The YES Center Cox’s Bazar is one of the institutions, where many young people from Ramu in Cox’s Bazar received training for their future lives. Different courses of this Center help hundreds of young people to become self- reliant. The YES Center managed by YPSA provided a lot of opportunities to its students.

I am Hamid Hussein Azad. I live in Kala Khondoker Para village, which is located at South Mithacory in RamuUpazilla. The YES Center is a well-known place, located at Panerchora village, Mithathory union, RamuUpazilla in Cox’s Bazar district. I was also one of the students of this Center and I participated in three training, which were hotel management, life skills development and blog writing.

There are 6 types of management training courses at the YES Center. These courses are ICT (computer), office management and secretarial course, hotel management, tourist guide course, English language course and basic accountancy and book – keeping course. After completing these courses many students got a job in different organizations. The YES Center is fulfilling the expectations of all us and of our parents. The initiative of the YES Center is not only to eradicate poverty, but also to develop a valuable human being. The YES Center also encourages us to continue higher education and to do something for our family and for society. And much more:a strong tie of friendship is also created between all the participants of the YES Center.

Besides management training courses the YES Center run by YPSA provided life skill training to its students. The components of this training are very important for sustainability of an individual. This training elaborately discussed the various techniques related toself development, self confidence, interpersonal relationship, problem solving capacity and sustainability of an individual life.

At last I would like to request all young people to take lesson at the YES Center. It will help you to build up a meaningful career. The initiatives of the YES Center are also helpful to discover all the proper tracks in lifeto make us successful and to become respectful citizens.

Hello, my name is Sheikh Farid Uddin Fahad! I live in Paner Chara village. The YES Center is located nearby. I am completing an English Language Course in the YES Center.

I know that this course is very effective and important, because English is an international language. Therefore, it is of special demand all over the world.

We know, that English is the main language to communicate with international communities.Actually, at present most of the companies in Bangladesh are looking for employees, that are proficient in English language. This criteria is reflected in the posted job vacancies. It is also true, that most of the books in higher education are published in English.

Both, the students, who want to ensure their access to higher education and those who wish to enter a decent job market need to know how to read, write and speak good English. As I live in a small village there was no opportunity to learn the English language. But after the establishing of the YES Center the youth of this locality and in the surrounding areas are immensely benefiting from the courses offered by the center, which is so near to us! The English language courses offered to the youth by the YES Center helps the young people like me to add skills to the curricular activities and enhance the educational level of the students.

Many students, who finished one of the English language courses got a good job after completing this course. After the Rohingyarefugees influxin Cox’s Bazar many job opportunities popped up suddenlyfor the committed youth of this locality. Most of the students of the YES Center already got a job in different local, national and international organizations. Many foreigners of different international organizations are now working in the humanitarian response program for the Rohingya in Cox’s Bazar. And those foreigners need interpreters.Student who are proficient in English,get better jobs.The English language course not only increasesthe efficiency in English, but also helps to alleviate the unemployment problem. It helps to sustainable development in our country.

Now I completed my S.S.C exam and I want to complete higher education. I want to become a software engineer. I am preparing myself for this career path and the English language course is one of the steps, which will help me to complete my dream…

Hello! I am Jasim Uddin. My village is Kathalia , which is located to the East side of Moricha Bazar in Ukhia Thana in Cox’s Bazar district.

We are Bangladeshi. Around half of the population of our country is young. As Bangladesh is a developing country, we are facing various limitations. That’s why many people of our country do not want to involve themselves with self-employment. But from the beginning of my student’s life, I had a dream to establish an organization with young people, which will contribute for creating self employment.

At first I initiated and started to organize youth from my own community from the year 2014. Onwards two of my friends extended their hands to me. We named the organization JSR (Justice Solidarity Reunity) -student group. After a while we realized that for strengthening our initiatives we needed some capacity.

Then I heard about the YES Center and I got admitted in the ICT course and I successfully completed my training course. I also received life skills training. By participating in the life skills training at the YES Center I learnt the concept of life skills, the different component of life skills, team building, solving problems and interpersonal relationships, which helped me a lot to strengthen my organization.

The YES Center also gave me the opportunity to participate in computer training. I also participated in the blogger training and now I am a member of the blogger group of the YES Center. The opportunities of the YES Center inspired me to go forward.

At present my organization has 1.157 members. Two hundred members of our club donate Tk. 100 in each month. We deposit Tk. 20,000 in each month. The members of my club have also established a library in my locality. We also initiated some small-scale businesses. We successfully generated self-employment of six people. We also try to expand our business. Our future target is to establish a big hospital in Cox’s Bazar district…

We also want to build a drug free society. We are collectively initiating drug free campaigns in our locality. We know that youth are the driving force for our future. But youth in my locality are facing different types of challenges. “Yabba” (Methylamphetamine) is a very dangerous drug, which affects the young people. Another big menace in this locality is child marriage …

In future we will establish a computer lab in our locality. Hundreds of student will get an opportunity to get ICT related knowledge from our lab. For reducing the problem of unemployment we developed JSR student group. By taking various initiatives we want to build a better and poverty free society. We want to create employment for thousands of people.

The YES Center is implementing a skills driven project for generating employment and changing the socio –economic condition of this locality. Youth in this locality are benefitting a lot from this project. The skills driven courses of this project are ICT and computer training, office management and secretariat training, hotel management training, basic accountancy and bookeeping training and tourist guide training. We, the trainees, immensely benefited from these training courses! Thank you, ESPRIT and YOU Foundation and YES Center!

Ayesha Akter

I am Ayesha Akter. I am 19 years old. At present, I am a student of honors first year in Cox’s Bazar city college. Cox’s Bazar is my birthplace.

I am living in Cox’s Bazar from my childhood. For this reason, I love this district a lot. The longest sea beach in the world is located in this district. For this reason, it is a famous tourist spots in the whole world. This district is also famous for it’s other attractive tourist spots. Cox’s Bazar is one of the most vulnerable district for various types of natural and manmade disasters. Now millions of Rohingya refugees are staying in this host district.

Every year millions of tourists visit our country. Especially they come here to enjoy the natural beauty of Cox’s Bazar. Among those visitors, there are also women visitors. Female visitors prefer female tourist guides for ensuring their smooth visit.
A tourist guide is also important for ensuring the maximum hospitality for the tourists. However, in Cox’s Bazar there are not enough guides to deliver tourists a good service. Lack of fluency in English is one of the fundamental reasons of the shortage of tourist guides.

There are very few skills driven education center in Bangladesh. The YES Center is one of the important institutions among them. This learning center has been providing different types of trainings to the students as a part of its skills driven education since 2016. English language course is one of the important course among these activities. I am a student of English language course. I want to increase my speaking and writing capacity by proper utilization of this course. I think this course is very important for building up a better career for myself.

I know that English is an international language. Proficiency in English language is very important for getting a better job at home as well as abroad. The hospitality industry in Cox’s Bazar is suffering a lot for the shortage of sufficient tourist guides. Lack of communication skills in English is the fundamental reason for it. During the time of various disasters different international and foreign relief agencies did not get appropriate support because of that shortage of available interpreters. Most of the students in this locality do not have sufficient writing and speaking capability in English. That’s why I got admission in the English language course at the YES Center Cox’s Bazar.

It is true that the YES center has taken an initiative to overcome these skills limitations. It has been trying to create a better environment for learning English. Personally, I am very grateful to the YES Center Cox’s Bazar for inviting me to join this education cycle, which deserves appreciation!

My name is Mobinul Hoque, I am a student of 8th semester in Polytechnic Institution in Cox’s Bazar. Student life is the initial stage of our life. It is also a foundation stage and an important period for building a better future. A student can gather vast practical knowledge from his surrounding environments. Student life is the period for taking proper preparation for our practical life and skills driven education is very crucial for students in enhancing practical knowledge in this globalization.

I am also trying to enhance my practical knowledge for my job in future. And I prefer a job in the hospitality sector. Because the hotel sector is a vibrant sector and it is globally a very popular sector. One can know the diversity of real life from this sector. In the hotel sector we have a vast opportunity to build our career based in Cox’s Bazar and across our country.

Cox's Bazar is my permanent residence. It is located at the south eastern part of Bangladesh. The longest sea beach in the world is located in this district. This is why this town has become the most attractive place for the tourists of Bangladesh and all over the world. A large number of tourists come here from home and abroad. For this reason, this city has become the hub of our hotel business.

The hotel sector dominates the market in this town. At present more than 800 hotels are located or conducting their business in Cox's Bazar. About 200,000 people are directly and indirectly engaged in this sector. When I heard about the YES Center and it’s offer for a Hotel Management training, I visited the Center. I was surprised to see a nice center surrounding with a nice natural view at Ramu. Seeing all the facilities, environment and all the courses I decided to admit myself in the hotel management course in the center.

I have been regularly attending classes in the hotel management course since December 2017. Now I joined a hotel in Cox’s Bazar as part time staff and I’m also continuing my studies at my collage. I enjoyed the course and especially now the job very much and I always encourage my friends to join in at the hotel jobs along with their studies. I believe that one can build his career in this sector in a much brighter way after having receiving the training from the YES Center Cox Bazar! My thank you goes to the donors Esprit and YOU Foundation who have made this center possible!
Sumi Akhter: We all know that tobacco is the single largest preventable cause of death and it is the only legally available consumer product, that kills people. Tobacco causes cancers of the lung, larynx, kidney, bladder, stomach, colon, oral cavity and esophagus as well as leukemia, chronic bronchitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, ischemic heart disease, stroke, miscarriage and premature birth, birth defects and infertility, since tobacco contains 7000 chemicals, which are very harmful for health. Bangladesh is one of the countries, where both production and consumption of tobacco use is high. A study of WHO shows that 100,000 people die yearly and 382,000 people become disabled due to illness caused by tobacco related diseases in Bangladesh. Tobacco is not only harmful to health, but also to the economy, the environment, nutrition, poverty, women, children, adolescents and overall human rights.

Tobacco consumption in Bangladesh is increasing, especially among the youth and the poor. The Global Adults Tobacco Survey report’ 2009 of WHO says that current tobacco user (smoking and smoke less) among all adults is 43.3% (41.3 million) in Bangladesh. The survey also says that the age at smoking initiation is now between the ages of 15-16 years and 24.4% are rural residents and 26.7% urban residents. Among urban smokers, 21.0% initiate smoking between the ages 17-19, compared to 17.7% of rural smokers. Nearly 9 out of 10 smokers started smoking by the age of 18. The study says, that 98% people of the country think, that more young people have been attracted to smoking then in earlier times because of the availability of cigarettes at a low price.

The fight against tobacco has been taken for many years for addressing these issues. Bangladesh has ratified the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) in 2003 emphasizing the need to regulate and control tobacco products globally, however it still has one of the highest tobacco use prevalence. In 2005 the Bangladesh Government passed the Smoking and Tobacco Usage (Control) Law and in 2006 passed rules to facilitate the enforcement of the law. The implementation of the FCTC is one of the targets contributing to achieving SDG 3. Based on the SDG Bangladesh has included the tobacco control (TC) program in its “7th Five Years Plan”. The honourable Prime Minister of Bangladesh declared, that Bangladesh will become tobacco free by 2040. The TC law bans tobacco smoking in all public places and public transports. Display of vigilance notice is mandatory for all public places and public transports. But tobacco use is still a widespread phenomenon in Bangladesh.

Considering the above facts, Cox’s Bazar municipality has taken an initiative to establish a model tobacco free city. Cox’s Bazar City is a coastal district located in the South-Eastern part of Bangladesh. It is situated in the Chittagong Division. Cox’s Bazar is a main tourist area in Bangladesh and the Cox’s Bazar sea beach is the longest sea beach in the World. People from different parts of the country and abroad as well visit this area, so it has an opportunity to exhibit a model tobacco free city for all of them, that will motivate people to replicate this idea in other regions and areas of the country and aborad.

A youth volunteer group is already involved with the initiative. I am one of the members of the volunteer group. 10 graduate trainees from YES CENTER Cox’s Bazar are now working together with the group. Our main aim is to establish a tobacco free Cox’s Bazar city and to save the youth and others from the harms of tobacco use. On 31st December 2017 we conducted a beach campaign under the title of “Tobacco free Cox’s Bazar” at the sea beach area. We carried basket bins, collected buds of cigarettes and Biri from the beach, we requested the smokers not to smoke at the sea beach & then to throw their cigarettes and Biri in the sand… and those throwing their buds in a rubbish bin, we greeted with a little chocolate The campaign created a huge attention by the tourists of the sea beach. We enjoyed it a lot and we feel that it is our duty to contribute for the betterment of our society. I know that it was a very small initiative, but I believe that if we can continue our work with a specific goal and direction we can achieve many things and in the long run we can say “We shall overcome someday, deep in my heart, we do believe that we shall overcome someday”.

It is my earnest request to my friends, relatives, readers and others, not to smoke and convey the message to others…

Shahin Aktar: Wealth is created, where it rains. Rain is sign of love and affection. The same feeling belongs to a woman. They are the soul and strength of a country.

Bangladesh is a middle-income country. One half of the population of Bangladesh are women. Hoever, most of the women are not empowered. The main causes behind it, is that women are facing lots of obstruction from their family and society and they also don’t get enough opportunities to be empowered. However, it is possible to strengthen the situation of women through resolving all obstacles and problems in their way… like Begum Rokeya Sakhawat did.

Begum Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain (1880-1932) is widely acknowledged and accepted as a female iconic figure in Bangladesh, who undertook serious efforts to improve and strengthen the situation of women in society. She understood the causes of the despicable situation of women and “prescribed” women education as a remedy. Rokeya emphasized women education to emancipate them so that they could be free as humans. Rokeya played an important role in spreading women’s education and their empowerment. She tried to rectify unnatural practices of seclusion and men’s negative perception of education for women. Finally, Rokeya urged all women to undertake every effort to move forward and to foster their intellect via education.

She said “unless we, the women, receive higher education, society will not achieve progress. As long as we are not equal to our men in the spiritual world, the mere hope of progress is nothing but a mirage. We must cultivate all branches of knowledge.” She wrote in a number of genres, short stories, poems, essays and novels. Her writings called upon women to protest against injustices and break the social barriers that discriminated them. Respecting her contribution every year Bangladesh observes Rokeya day on 9th December, her birthday. And today, on her birthday I want to say, that we have to think about women equality like she did. For removing all barriers each woman needs to be educated and has to move forward.

It is important to provide capacity development training to women so that they can develop their knowledge, skills and can compete strongly with other, men and women alike. Life skills training is such a training, which helps to build female confidence, decision making capacity, self-respect and personality. Many families still exclude women from every kind of development and even locking them out from all recreational events by putting the excuse of religion. For empowering the women, we need the support from our families and from society. We need to co-operate with the women of Bangladesh to utilize their intelligence and potentialities so that they can lead a balanced life and contribute to the development of the society.
We have to acknowledge, that a woman is empowered when she is aware of herself. Nowadays many women in Bangladesh became successful due to their education, development, awareness and empowerment… Our honorable Prime Minister as well as the leader of the opposition party and the speaker of the National Parliament of our country are women. Many women are now in higher positions and also doing many risky jobs just like men.

Dear readers, rights are not given by others, they should be gained by ourselves. I think I am different from the other women in our society. Because I got some opportunities to develop myself at the YES Center Cox’s Bazar and I gained knowledge, information and capacity from the center. I believe each woman should try to gain her rights and go forward in her life. Women are very much sincere, honest and professional in their work- so let’s use our internal power! Let us do something for the young women of our society!
Jannatul Hafsa: Every person has his or her own dream and I had a dream to do something of my own choice beside my studies. But I could not get an opportunity to fulfill my dream. One day when I was discussing with my college friends and other students in front of our Principal’s room, we met with a person who told and invited us to join with tourist guide training at YES CENTER COX’S BAZAR. When he asked me I certainly agreed and expressed my interest to join in the training. And successfully I did a 3 months course at the YES CENTER COX’S BAZAR with great pleasure.

After completing my training, one day the manager of the YES CENTER introduced all the participants of the course “tourist guide” to our department head and other teachers of our college at our Principal’s room and they wanted to know more about our training. On 5th October 2017 at 9.30 am, Mr. S. M. Aktar Chowdhury, head of our department called me over phone and asked me to work as a tourist guide and told me to meet the Principal. When I finally met our Principal, Mr. Kathying Aung, I found that tourists were already waiting for me in his office. They were a group of journalists from the private TV channel “Dipto”, who will work on the Rohingya issue. My responsibilities were to guide them in the Rohingya camp at Ukhia & Taknaf and to translate the Rohingya language into Bangla in front of the camera. I worked for 6 days with the team from 5th to 10th of October 2017.

I also guided them to visit different places of Ukhia, Kutupalong, Balukhali and many more. It was my first job-experience in my life. I learnt a lot from this tour and I was very happy to have achieved something, which I could not have gained by any other means.

My dear readers, if I describe my work on those days then you could realize what a busy time we had! On 5th October we went to West Hindu Para, Kutupalong, Ukhia. There we made an interview with a Hindu woman, who fled from Myanmar and took shelter in this camp. We also interviewed several United Nations senior officials. On 6th October we went to Balukhali Camp 2 and interviewed officials of the Bangladesh Army about the present situation of the Rohingya refugees. I also helped the team to take some shots of the relief distribution work, as I had some experiences in work with the Rohingya as a volunteer of YPSA.

On the 3rd day we interviewed representatives from different national and international organizations such as as the World Food Program, Concern Worldwide, YPSA and others. On the 4th day we went to see the workers of the soap and garments factories at Kutupalong camp and on the 5th day we had a meeting with Mr. Mahidur Rahman, the Additional District Commissioner (who is the responsible person for the Rohingya camps) and with Mr. Samantha Sahanir, representative of IOM. On last day we made several interviews with the civil society of Cox’s Bazar.

On that day I also guided the team to visit some tourist spots in Cox’s Bazar. By getting exposed to this work I gathered a lot of experience and knowledge, which will help me to build my career and to further strengthen my capacity. I leant about the methods of journalism, the way of making lively interviews with high officials and renowned persons. I also got the chance to visit many new places and made to learn how a TV channel works. I also got a good feedback for my first work as a tourist guide, which will help me to do my future work with courage and always with a smiling on my face... First the training and then the exposure to real life strengthened my confidence again!

Really, there is no boundary for learning. Learning is never a waste of time, it always helps us to go further in our personal development. The tourist guide training of the YES CENTER gave me this opportunity and I am really grateful to have been offered this opportunity!
Sumi Akter: The education that increases the practical and technical knowledge and skills for a specific occupation is called vocational education. The vocational education prepares a person to work in agriculture, trade, a craft, or industry as a technical or in professional vocations through a combination of theoretical teaching and practical experience. It helps people to increase their capacity, better performance in their jobs and involve them with creative and productive activities. Once upon a time we had endless natural resources and people lived happily their life. But now the population has increased tremendously and this population growth creates pressure on our remaining natural resources. So it is very important to develop a person as a human resource. One of the objectives of vocational training is to promote a balancing of supply and demand for skilled labor in both wage employment and for skills needed for self-employment in rural and urban areas. Vocational education has been given the role of transforming of our country’s economy and to meet the demands of the labor market. It enriches a person for life and it provides the competences which are necessary in a democratic society. Societal and economic development depends on the strength of vocational education as it provides access to skills and entry routes into the labor market.

Vocational educational and training promote equitable access to vocational training regardless of geographical locations, physical disabilities and sex, so even the vulnerable groups are able to contribute toward poverty reduction and its eradication. Vocational education has a vital role to play in poverty reduction through employment generation. The critical role of vocational education is highly needed to improve productivity, income and equitable access to employment opportunities.

The problem of youth unemployment is currently a serious issue and the vast majority of youth receive no vocational training of any kind. Many youths work as unskilled laborers in small and medium sized firms, and their employment is inferior and lowly paid. Although vocational training is practiced in Bangladesh, youth employment is still low and there is no documented information on the contribution of vocational education to youth employment. A number of youth are remaining in the labor market for a long period without accessing employment, because most of the youth have no skills. Skills requirement in the labor market are not compatible with skills supply. It is argued, that one of the factors contributing to poverty is lack of equal access to employable skills to enable the disadvantaged population engage in productive activities and increase their earnings. Now a day it is very essential to have knowledge and skills on modern technology. In this regards computer training, hotel management, tourist guide, English language courses, office management courses, basic accountancy courses, and similar are very useful in creating opportunities for new employment in our socio-economic context. Unemployment will become intolerable if they are not utilized properly. Technical education builds confidence in self employment and helps to become self-reliant. If we are aware of the technical education of young people and women, then the rural economic of our country will more easily be developed.

The job oriented technical education is expanding in Bangladesh and gradually the popularity and demand of technical or vocational education are increasing among the young generation. Besides, there are many technical and vocational training institutions established already in Bangladesh like for engineering, polytechnics, graphic arts, leather and textile technology, veterinary, interior decoration, gardening, advertisement, handicrafts, groceries, fishery, livestock, poultry, flower gardening, computer running, kitchen industry and many more, which are becoming more attractive among the young generation. In the present day, only text book knowledge is not enough to get into the specialized job. If the youth are not economically self-reliant, then more than half of the population will be unemployed and our country cannot achieve the expected economic growth.

In this context, the YES CENTER COXS BAZAR has been established in the village of Panerchora under the southern Mithachari union of Ramu upazila of Cox's Bazar district with the aim to improve the capacity of youth and to facilitate to have job opportunity. The YES CENTER provides six types of skill development training, which are very much essential and job oriented in present day. These trainings encourage the youth and especially the young women to be economically self-sufficient, take family responsibilities and also encourage them to take leadership in their society. Finally, the YES CENTER COX’S BAZAR will help us to move the wheel of our rural economy and remove the darkness of our society. Let us wake up and encourage our frustrated young people to have technical education and build their future!
Jannatul Hafsa: Since August 25, 2017 when violence escalated in Myanmar's Rakhine State, more than 500,000 people including children and adults from the ethnic Rohingya minority of Myanmar crossed over to Cox’s Bazar and Bandarban district in Bangladesh fearing for their lives. Many of those crossing into Bangladesh arrive exhausted, sick and hungry after enduring days on the move. Among them many are pregnant and lactating women, and children under five. More than 70% of the refugees are without adequate shelter, food, sanitation facilities and half have no safe drinking water. This is a large scale and escalating humanitarian crisis. They are living in terrible conditions and need life-saving assistance now. According to UNHCR, they join the more than 400,000 others already living there in cramped makeshift camps since the early 1990s. Existing camps and the ones newly being set up are inadequate to deal with the massive influx, resulting in many seeking shelter under open skies, by the roadside and in forest & hill areas with little or no protection.

Due to the inadequate drinking water and sanitation facilities, there's a high probability for the spread of waterborne diseases. They need food security assistance. Recent rains have caused flooding in some of the makeshift settlements, and delivery of relief aid has slowed down. Some of the spontaneous settlements along slopes and roadsides are at risk of mudslides. They need humanitarian support immediately and Bangladeshi people, Government of Bangladesh, different NGOs, private sector and international organizations are providing support to them.

Observing the situation with our own eyes we feel that we need to do something for them and stand beside them. Expressing this to the management of the YES Center Cox’s Bazar they gave us an opportunity to get involved with the humanitarian support for Rohingya. 15 students of the YES Center including 5 from the youth bloggers group worked as volunteer in three camps in Cox’s Bazar like Kutupalong camp in Ukhia, Leda camp and Shaplapur camp in Teknaf. We collected information of Rohingya at Moynartek under Kutupalong camp. At first, we visited different hills and camps where the Rohingya took shelter and prepared a list of 11,500 refugees for providing relief support; we also distributed 25 kg rice to each person on behalf of YPSA and with the support of the World Food Organization. The ICT training students of the YES Center Cox’s Bazar worked to develop a database for Rohingya for relief aid.

During working at different camps, what I saw there from the 1st to 5th day cannot be described in words. They are living a dreadful life. Many of them were from solvent family, but now they do not have anything to survive. Many of them lost their family members and relatives. The refugees told stories of gang rape, mass killings and brutal beatings and sexual violence. The life story of children who lost everyone is different. They fled to Bangladesh with unknown people, their parents and siblings having been killed in front of them. They are moving around alone in Cox’s Bazar. I could not hold my tears hearing their story…

People of all walks of life in Bangladesh, Bangladesh Government, different NGOs, private sector and international organizations are providing support to the refugees, but this is by far not sufficient considering the huge number of Rohingya, who came from Myanmar. They need safe drinking water, toilet facilities, shelter, treatment, food, cloth... But the love and the support of common people of Bangladesh have no boundaries. And all of us of the YES Center Cox’s Bazar, we are really proud to be a member of the humanitarian support program for Rohingya refugees in Cox’s Bazar!
Wasim Hasnat : Bangladesh is a low middle income country. Our country is expecting to become a middle income country by 2021. For the economic growth, youth can play an advanced role in reaching the aim of Bangladesh becoming a middle income country. The youth of the country have already proven, that they have the ability to become drivers for change and growth in the social and the economic fields. But youth unemployment is a major problem for Bangladesh over the past decades. When young workers are not able to connect to the labour market, it profoundly impacts their ability to participate fully in the economy and threatens their social and economic future. Sometimes many young people could not get a proper job and could not work as per their ability and qualifications and as a result they could not utilize their ability, which often drives them into frustration. So nowadays a proper job is considered a “Golden Deer” among the educated male and female youth. Besides, when we apply for any job we risk of not getting it due to lack of experience and skills.

Last year many times I also faced interviews for jobs, but I failed to get the job due to lack of experience and because I hadn’t received any skills training. Finally I had to admit, that the “Golden Deer” was out-of-reach for me and the idea grew to think, that getting a job means winning the jackpot of a lottery! And I felt frustrated…
A few months back I heard, that YES CENTER COX’S BAZAR has offered a “Hotel management course” for youth free of charge. Knowing about the course I communicated with the YES CENTER and after checking their campus and environment, I decided to enroll and finally I participated in this “Hotel Management Course”. The contents, facilitation, materials, logistics, training environment and the behavior of the responsible persons of the YES CENTER were too good. We learnt so many things from them and the course was interesting and demand-driven. There were practical classes and we also visited some renowned hotels in Cox’s Bazar and got a practical insight about the hotel management, which helped to build up our confidence.

After completing the course I felt as if I had been working in this hotel sector since long and the course also changed my perception about hotel sector. Now I am very much confident, that after completing my education, when I face any interview in the hotel sector I will be selected by the employers. Now I think that getting a job is not a “Golden Deer” for me as we have the YES CENTER behind us, supporting us. Besides other advantages, this training helped me to develop my personality, taught me to be conscious and changed my lifestyle. Along with the Hotel Management Course I also received a life skills training from the YES CENTER and I learnt how we can adopt and survive in a critical situation. I am really grateful to the YES CENTER and I hope, that the YES CENTER will continue its training program and support for the youth and will have many good news for us in the future!

Abdullah Al Mamun: Youth are the backbone of any country because the
development of a country mostly depends on the integrated development of youth.
Development in Bangladesh also depends on proper utilization of youth because
they constitute about one-third of the total population. But the youth are
suffering from various socio-economic problems, such as unemployment,
underemployment, illiteracy, lack of technical education and training and the
financial crisis for self-employment which causes mass poverty.

The progress of economic and social status depends on the active
participation of an educated, trained and skilled youth force in the development
process, but the youth do not get the opportunity to acquire such qualities.
Consequently, they are not able to participate in the decision making process
of development work as well as in their self-employment. Besides the
technology-based education system, technology based institutions and vocational
training are not developed adequately. So the youth do not have much
opportunity to get technology-based professional education and training that
can help them to get jobs, create self-employment, and develop their leadership

As a result of this situation youth are not only detached

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12pt; text-align: center;">Abdullah Al Mamun: On 17 December 1999, the United Nations General Assembly endorsed the recommendation made by the World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth held in Lisbon on 8-12 August 1998 that 12 August be declared International Youth Day. Since then different countries started to observe International Youth Day. The United Nations (UN) International Youth Day is celebrated on August 12 each year to recognize efforts of the world’s youth in enhancing global society. It also aims to promote ways to engage them in becoming more actively involved in making positive contributions to their communities. In each year a specific theme is highlighted on the day. International Youth Day 2017 is dedicated to celebrating young people’s contributions to conflict prevention and transformation as well as inclusion, social justice, and sustainable peace through focusing a theme on 'Youth Building Peace'.

We, the YES youth blogger group took decision to arrange an event to observe the day. We discussed with all the group members and decided that we will arrange a tree plantation program at South Mithachori high school (Ramu) and the school authority agreed with us.

Today the world is facing environmental problems. Global warming, ozone depletion and pollution are burning issues. Planting trees is one of the easiest and most sustainable ways to positively affect the environment. We need trees now more than ever. Trees are our lifeline to cleaner air and a healthier environment. Besides trees and plants are the prime source of environmental purification and beautification. Trees inhale carbon dioxide and exhale oxygen, reduce temperature and create a healthy effect, both physically and psychologically, on human beings. We believe that Youth community has such responsibilities in the development of the area, as well as the responsibility of protecting the area from the impact of climate change through environmental development or social forestry. So we decided to arrange tree plantation program on the occasion of International Youth day 2017 and also to inspire other youths and students to plant more tree for protecting our environment.
For observing the day, we invited all teachers and students of Mithachori School and trainees of the YES Centre for attending the event. On 12 August 2017, at 10am a discussion session was arranged where all students and teachers participated. On behalf of the bloggers, Syed Masud, Wasim Hasnat and myself shared the theme and significant of the International Youth Day and also shared our blog activities. After that, Ms. Farida Akter, the head teacher of the school inaugurated the tree plantation program. All the teachers, students and blogger groups of the school were present at the time.

A total of 140 participants were present in the event including eight blogger members, 20 youth who had completed various training from the YES Centre, more than 100 students of the school, teachers and local leaders. We planted 40 plants including local medicinal and woody plants like Amlaki, Haritaki, Bohera, Raintree etc. We arranged this program and bought trees at our own costs. Every blogger willingly provided his/her support. We think that we can only achieve sustainable peace and build cohesive and resilient societies if we all work together. We have demonstrated that we are willing to show solidarity and contribute to our communities!
The youth are the great force for the
progress of any country and society, but youth in our Bangladeshi society is
far behind any development. Every young person has a dream to contribute to the
development of the community, country and family after completing their study.
But it is fact that the youth of the rural area are less privileged than the
urban youth. The urban youth enjoy many opportunities like higher education
institutions, skill development training, can use information technology and
can connect with the information of the whole world. On the other hand, the
youth of the rural area are facing many problems such as lack of employment
opportunities, lack of training facilities, lack of economic activities etc. And
if a young person received any training
he/she could not utilized the skills due to lack of employment opportunities
here. In this circumstance, the YES Center Cox’s Bazar is contributing for
creating opportunities for the rural youth to make them active citizens.

I belong to a poor family of Chaillatali village of South Mithachari Uion of
Ramu Upazila of Cox's Bazar district. My family tried to give me the
opportunity to have higher education, but my family could not pay for the
necessary training for me.
The YES CENTER COX’S BAZAR gave me the chance to get
this training. That's why I am expressing my gratitude to the family of the YES
CENTER project. With the support of the YES Center, I successfully completed an
expensive training of ICT. It was a three months course that run from 16
January 2017 to 15 April 2017. I noticed during my training at the YES CENTER
COX’S BAZAR that the venue of the course was so beautiful, we could enjoy a
green and hilly environment. There were adequate equipment facilities for the
training, nice facilitation by the trainers, sincerity of the training staff,
frequent supervision and cooperation with the trainees.

YES Center Cox’s
Bazar has not only taught me ICT, but it also taught me how to use life skills
to become self reliant, self confident and how to create jobs for the
neglected youth community. After completing the training, I received a
certificate and got also involved with the small blogger group. We share our
feelings, dreams and future plans through the blog so that everybody can know
about us and our work. I also want to share it with the international community
as well.

My expectation is that the YES Center will
continue the training for youth here. Because sometimes unemployment leads a young
person to get involved with crime. So for protecting the young generation
training could be an effective tool. By using the knowledge and skills the trained
youth will either join the workforce successfully or create jobs for other young people.

After finishing the ICT training, I have set
my goal for my future life. I want to build my career within the ICT world.

Finally I would say that the YES Center
does not only provide training to the youth for employment, but it also assists
to develop future leaders for our nation in which women are also getting
opportunities to develop themselves and get involved with the economic
development in rural areas. I believe that through the support of the YES Centre
not only 400 young people will benefit, but more than 400,000 youth will
benefit! Specially I would like to express my most heartfelt gratitude to
Esprit and to the YOU Foundation for providing their support to us and also
thanks to YPSA and HOPE'87-Bangladesh, who are implementing the valuable
training programs.<span style="font-family: "sutonnymj"; mso-bidi-font-family: SutonnyMJ; mso-bidi-language: HI;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Life skills are the skills that we need to deal effectively with the challenges in our everyday life, whether at school, at work or in our social and personal life. It was a big question for me what the importance of life skill training for young people would be. I hope, that you may have that same question like me. Young people, especially young women in Cox’s Bazar, are always busy with their household activities or education and to get married with an unknown person according to the choice of our parents or guardians and to pass the whole life with that person.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">We have no specific choice and we do not have a plan on what we want to do, how we can develop ourselves, in which direction we want to go. Girls are often considered to be a financial burden to their families. For those reasons girls and women face many obstacles regarding their development and they are suffering a lot.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">They are victims of violence, oppression and discrimination and as a result they fall behind in our society.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">So for making the life wonderful we need to have a plan besides continuing our education and for an effective planning life skills training could be a perfect means. I feel that there is no alternative of it.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; text-align: justify;">Life skills training is a helpful approach by which we can build our life nicely and develop our life through realizing our potentiality and strengths. It also gives us direction for developing our dreams. This is very important for all male and female youth. Before participating in the life skills training I did not know how to make a plan, how we can split a big plan into smaller steps to be taken and how all detailed plans can become successful. However, life skills training helped me to understand it. This training built up my confidence, my presentation skills, my self control and my self dignity. In spite of enrolling with an educational program, I felt that I am hopeless and a burden to my family and that I will never be able to express my courage. But now I am confident enough to express myself and I believe that I can do as many things as I wish. The YES Center Cox’s Bazar provided us with a life skills training which helped me to develop so many aspects of my personality like:

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">1. Respect for my work

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">2. Self confidence

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">3. Responsiveness towards my duties

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">4. Capacity to solve problems

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">5. Development of leadership sills and conflict management

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">6. Knowledge of creativity

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">7. Experiences and skills

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">8. to be industrious and to avoid laziness

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">9. to be free from fear, shyness and from inferiority

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">10.and to proceed based on my plan!

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">As Chief guest in the inaugural session of the life skills training, the Deputy Director of the Youth Development Department of Cox’s Bazar said “Every youth should participate in the life skills training”. And I also fully agreed with his comment. Let us change our life style and participate in life skills training for building our self confidence!

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Cox’s Bazar is the world largest sea beach area and we are proud of it. But unfortunately, people of this prestigious region are living a neglected and dark life. In this situation, the YES CENTER COX’S BAZAR becomes the guide of young people of Cox’s Bazar.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The center is implementing many development activities in this region and with the marginalized youth of Cox’s Bazar for changing their livelihood. The YES CENTER COX’S BAZAR is a real resource in this region. It is situated in Ramu Upazilla of Cox’s Bazar district which is the South-eastern part of Bangladesh.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The CENTER provides us different training facilities, especially for young women. I live in Cox’s Bazar and when I heard about the YES CENTER I expressed my interest and I got admitted. I received Life Skill Education training at first and many students, young boys and girls like me gained knowledge on life related information which helped us to develop our social competency, social behavior and problem solving skills. This training also helped to recognize our own identity and build our self confidence.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">YES CENTER COX’S BAZAR provides 6 types of management and skill development training for the youth of Ramu Upazila of Cox’s Bazar district. These training are: ICT (Computer) training, Hotel Management, Tourist guide, Basic Accountancy & Book keeping, Office management & secretariat and English Language courses. Besides, Life Skill Education and school based Disaster Risk Reduction training are also arranged in the YES CENTER. Students are getting these training free of cost and it ensures young women participation in all the training.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The course timeline for each training is 3 months and 3 classes are conducted each week. In each month we participate in an examination to know the progress of us.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">If any student faces problems to attend in the course regularly, a responsible and concerned person of the YES CENTER COX’S BAZAR communicates with us and our parents for ensuring our regular attendance. Recently we received special uniforms and dresses and after completion of the training, every participant gets a certificate.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The YES CENTER does not only provide us training but they are also trying to communicate with different service providers for ensuring the employment opportunities and job placements for training participants. For this I noticed that they are organizing different advocacy meetings, round table discussions with different stakeholders for ensuring the jobs. We also received a short orientation on the textile industry and got many information about this sector so that we can build our career within the largest economical sector of Bangladesh.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Dear readers, you are thinking that I am writing here about an organization but it is true that I am a beneficiary of this YES CENTER COX’S BAZAR and received the training on “Hotel Management”. I also participated in a round table discussion on “Participation of young women in economic development: challenge and possibilities”, simulation sessions on disaster risk reduction, life skills training and blogger training.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">These training gave me a direction on how I develop myself to contribute in changing our economic conditions and present situation. Now I am more confident than before and planning to involve myself in economic activities after completion of my academic education and also I will try to help other youth girls in my society. For this reason, I want to say that the YES CENTER COX’S BAZAR becomes a guide for young women for empowerment and increase of their self confidence. I believe that we will bring about the change one day. I am requesting all young women to come forward and all together we can build our society and country economically sustained!

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">English and ICT Knowledge are
basic requirements of personal carrier development. Learning English is
important for career development of a youth. Apart from our mother tongue
(Bengali) we need to have a common language which makes us able to communicate
with other parts of the world. English is the common language which is known to
most of the people in the world.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">It is very important to speak good English
because an effective communication can reach people better.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">To realizing the
situation I was admitted to the English language course of YES CENTER COX’S
BAZAR. The length of this course was three months.
Here I have learnt how to communicate in English for instance, in speaking and
writing.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">At the beginning, I felt shy and unnatural. But after some time I got
a growing expertise in communication in English. In that consequence, I got a chance
to work at the Refugee Camp in Cox's Bazar under the World Food Program (WFP).
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I am now working here as a field researcher. I believed this is only possible
for having knowledge in English literacy. And I am thankful to the YES CENTER project
for giving me this opportunity. I am also requesting other young people of
Cox's Bazar for taking the training in English language course.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">YES CENTER
COX’S BAZAR also is providing other attractive
training such as: ICT (Computer) training , Hotel Management Course, Tourist
guide courses, Office management and secretarial course and Basic accountancy
& bookkeeping. I am specifically requesting the youth to attend the English
language course because:

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">English is the most commonly spoken language in the world;

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">English is the language of science, computers and tourism. Knowing English increases your chances of getting a good job in a multinational company within your home country or of finding work abroad.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">English is the official language of 53 countries. That is a lot of people to meet and speak to.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">English is the language of the media industry. If you speak English, you won’t need to rely on translations and subtitles anymore to enjoy your favorite books, songs, films and TV shows.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">English is also the language of the Internet. Many websites are written in English, you will be able to understand them and to take part in forums and discussions.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">English is not only useful, it gives you a lot of satisfaction.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">English is compulsory for higher study in abroad.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">So, by learning English, you will also learn about other cultures. Few experiences will make you grow as a person and you will learn about the values, habits and way of life of a culture that is different from yours. Overall, this knowledge will bring you ahead of others!
